The task of the modern educator is not to cut down jungles, but to irrigate deserts." - C.S. Lewis
My teaching philosophy is to do my best by making connections with my students that will make them feel seen, heard, and understood. To do this, I must remain authentic to myself, and self-reflective at all times of my actions and outlook. I seek to bridge divides, to be culturally responsive as an educator, and bring all students onto the same equitable playing field.
Teaching to me is about patience, understanding, and infusing passion into what you do. There are many times when rigor or hard-work will come into play, but to be a truly effective teacher requires creative solutions to overcome unseen obstacles; and while challenging, teaching to me is extremely rewarding.
Ultimately, my teaching philosophy boils down to two core concepts: One is about connection. Through my novels, a plethora of talks, and training in Kung Fu, I've gained insight on how to make connections and inspire students to reach their fullest potential--by teaching them to their limits, not to their limitations. And secondly, teaching to me is not so much about inputting or infusing your knowledge, but allowing the students to see their own potential, to lead them to the door of their own knowledge, passion and creativity, and in so doing transform their lives.
